The “East Side” of Las Vegas: A Latinx Historical Framework

Spanish heritage speakers in the United States are a reflection of everchanging linguistic and sociolinguistic pressures that result myriad varieties across generations. This paper provides preliminary historical framework to fill this gap knowledge Spanish-speaking community Las Vegas, Nevada. The goals were two-fold: (1) highlight largest communities Vegas (2) explore significance East Side history Latinx population Vegas. Through analysis oral histories works, investigation highlights Mexican, Salvadoran, Cuban populations their connections Sunrise Manor (Clark County, Nevada, USA), locally known as “East Side,” where majority Spanish-speakers reside. reveals “push” “pull” factors motivated immigration patterns these groups using primary source amplify experiences marginalized communities. broader implications include research inform teachers on local bring into classroom.
